West Bank

Stamford Hill, London£1.2mResidential

West Bank is a residential development for the Orthodox Jewish Community in Stamford hill. The end of terrace development has been designed around an apple tree which, for cultural reasons had to be retained. The importance of the tree is made evident by the abrupt slicing of the rear façade. The street façade continues the rhythms of the adjacent terrace, terminating in a swept gable.

The design of the garden house at the rear address the challenge of creating a comfortable home in an overlooked space by placing a particular emphasis on thresholds. The transition from the shared garden to the front door passes through a number of gateways, a low brick wall defines the house boundary, a deep projecting eaves or cornice shelters your arrival, a bridge carries you across an open light well/courtyard before you reach the front door and inner sanctum.
